LD’s House of Shaves

Laura D’Emidio has taken over ownership of Ann Smith’s A Little off the Top barbershop in Monongahela, renaming it LD’s House of Shaves in the process. No stranger to the Valley, D’Emidio was born and raised in Donora and moved into Monongahela almost three years ago. Taking over a business in town wasn’t a difficult decision to make. Laura believes that keeping business in Monongahela is important.

Her grandmother, Jean D’Emidio, was a prominent hair stylist in Donora years ago. Following in her footsteps, D’Emidio went to beauty school at Empire Beauty School in West Mifflin and then later attended barber school at Pittsburgh Barber School in the West End. After she graduated from barber school, she apprenticed under a master barber, Joe Ferruzza, in Bethel Park.

It was only a matter of time and waiting for the right opportunity before opening her own shop became a reality. Once the history of the shop was learned, the decision to bring back the essence of it through the décor was an easy decision. The barbershop still boasts the original stations from when the Inserra brothers had the shop open. The barber chairs date back to the 1940s and 1950s and were reupholstered and brought back to their original glory locally thanks to Nicholas Leoni. Black and white checkered flooring brings back the memories of the men being taken to the barber shop with their dads as young kids. Only now to pass the time while the men wait, there is the added bonus of complimentary ice-cold beer on tap, thanks to Cox’s Beer Distributing. Very soon, there will be root beer available for the little men, so they can be just like their dads!

LD’s House of Shaves is bringing back the old traditions of warm lather, hot towels, and straight razor shaves. D’Emidio created an environment where men can be men and enjoy the luxuries of being pampered without the high expenses. Haircuts range from $13 for children under 10 and men over 65 to $16 for the average man, and hot lather shaves are $18. Once you experience a straight razor shave from her, you will truly understand the saying, “There is no school like old school.”

With hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 3 -6 p.m. Friday, and 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, there is plenty of time to come in and treat yourself to the old school experience!
