When Douglas Myers was in high school, he had surgery. While he was in the hospital recuperating, he had a male nurse on the night shift who “spent an entire evening” telling him the virtues of a nursing career.

Doug Myers accepts his Cameos of Caring certificate from Mary Lou Murt, Monongahela Valley Hospital’s senior vice president and chief nursing officer.

In 1996, Mr. Myers received his Associate’s degree in Nursing from Penn State University. He joined the staff of Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) in 2000. On May 9, Mr. Myers was named MVH’s 2019 Cameos of Caring® Awardee.

During his 19-year career at MVH, Mr. Myers provided care to patients and their families on 7-West, 6-West, 6-East and most recently in the Operating Room (OR) where he has been for the past 12 years.

“Being an OR nurse, I see firsthand what the latest in surgical medicine can do,” explained Mr. Myers. “New technologies come out every year that make the impossible possible. I am most proud of the fact that I have a small part in a patient’s recovery that will help them live a normal life again.”

Mr. Myers was one of 13 nurses nominated by their peers for the prestigious Cameos of Caring Award. To be nominated, a nurse must demonstrate excellence in nursing care and provide compassionate patient care while serving as mentors for their fellow nurses.

“Doug is a skilled nurse who is a staunch advocate for his patients,” said Mary Lou Murt, MVH’s senior vice president and chief nursing officer. “He is highly respected by his colleagues for his medical expertise and caring attitude.”
