Health

Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs in August. Many of the events will be held in the hospital's Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.

 

Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, August 4 from 2 – 4 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.

Baby Care Class - Monday, August 4 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Parents-to-be will learn baby care basics at this instructional session. Topics include home safety, car seat safety, immunizations, breast and bottle feeding, pacifiers, bathing and additional topics. For more information, call 724-258-BABY (2229) ext. 9.

Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, August 5 – Thursday, August 7 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., ECC. Learn more about food choices, dining out and how personal eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Completion of the three-day "Diabetes Self-Management Training" is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Bone Density Screening - Wednesday, August 6 from 1 - 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Do you have brittle bones? Have you ever had a bone density test? This free, painless screening will indicate if you have osteoporosis and need more extensive testing. No appointments necessary. For more information, call 724-348-6699.

Healthy Directions 3rd Anniversary Celebration - Friday, August 8 from 8:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Celebrate another year of good health in the Finleyville community. Better Breathers Club - Tuesday, August 12 from 2 – 3 p.m., ECC. The Better Breathers Club is free and open to all adults and their families, friends or caregivers who want to learn or share information about living well with breathing issues such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, August 12 at 6 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.

Community CPR Instruction - Wednesday, August 13 at 11 a.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes are offered by Monongahela Valley Hospital in conjunction with Rostraver EMS. The fee for the class is $35 to cover the class and required materials. Innovations in Medicine – Post-Surgical Pain - Wednesday, August 13 at 6 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX, Willow Room. Thomas F. Brockmeyer, M.D., Ph.D., an orthopedic surgeon and director of the Orthopedic Institute, will present a free program to discuss ways of reducing discomfort associated with total knee replacements to promote healing and reduced recovery time. This program is part of MVH's Innovations in Medicine series featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Refreshments will be served and parking is free. Cancer Support Group - Monday, August 18 at 2 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all cancer patients and their families. The group meets the third Monday of each month. For additional information, call 724-258-1704.

Innovations in Medicine – Acupuncture - Monday, August 18 at 6 p.m., ECC. Lauren H. Ayersman, D.O., family practitioner, will present a free program to discuss acupuncture and the conditions it can treat. In addition to her osteopathic medicinal studies, Dr. Ayersman is certified and licensed in acupuncture. She studied medical acupuncture for physicians at Helms Medical Institute. This program is part of MVH's Innovations in Medicine series featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Light refreshments will be served and parking is free. Auxiliary Ice Cream Social - Friday, August 22 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., ECC. Open to the public. Enjoy a delicious lunch and a sundae made your way. Sponsored by the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. Proceeds from the event will be used to enhance services for patients and visitors at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Breastfeeding Class - Monday, August 25 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while feeding their newborns. Many props are used in this class including breast pumps. Prostate Cancer Support Group - Wednesday, August 27 at 6 p.m., ECC. All prostate cancer patients, families and care givers are invited to attend this free support group. For more information, call 724-292-9404.

Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, August 27 from 6 – 8 p.m., ECC. This is a diabetes self-management class that focuses on counting carbohydrate intake. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Completion of the three-day "Diabetes Self-Management Training" is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Stroke Support Group - Thursday, August 28 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with strokes and their after-effects. The group meets the last Thursday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1455.

Infant and Child CPR Class - Thursday, August 28 from 6 - 9 p.m., ECC. Learn how to help a choking baby or small child. Sign up to learn emergency life saving techniques of clearing airway obstructions and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling the Valley Health and Safety Training Center at 724-684-9536.

MVH Blood Drive - Friday, August 29 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., ECC. Monongahela Valley Hospital, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, is sponsoring a blood drive to benefit local patients.
