Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs in September. Many of the events will be held in the hospital's Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.

 

Bone Density Screening - Wednesday, September 3 from 1 – 3 p.m., Healthy Directions at Finleyville Giant Eagle. Do you have Brittle Bones? Have you ever had a bone density test? This free, painless screening and educational program will indicate if you need a more extensive test and if you have osteoporosis. No appointments necessary. Childbirth Preparation Class - Wednesday, September 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 7 – 9 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. A four-week series of prenatal education classes designed to prepare couples for their baby's birth. Topics include the role of a labor coach, signs of labor, pain medication options, vaginal and caesarian deliveries and comfort measures including breathing and relaxation skills. Couples will rehearse what they learn in class to help relieve anxiety surrounding the birthing experience. To register, call 724-258-BABY (2229) ext. 9.

Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Thursday, September 4 from 9 - 11 a.m., ECC. This is a diabetes self-management class that focuses on counting carbohydrate intake. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Completion of the three-day "Diabetes Self-Management Training" is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Cholesterol Screening - Saturday, September 6 from 7 – 11 a.m. In observance of National Cholesterol Education month, our staff will teach you how to follow a heart-healthy lifestyle and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. Cost of cholesterol test is $10. Add a blood sugar test for an additional $2. A 12–hour fast is required. Walk-ins are welcome, but please call to register for your screening, call 724-348-6699.

Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, September 8 from 2 - 4 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.

How to Prevent Diabetes - Monday, September 8, 15, 22, 29 and October 6 from 6 – 7 p.m., ECC. Do you want to live a healthier lifestyle and prevent diabetes? In this five-week education program, you will learn how to make better food choices, begin to lose weight, become more active, discuss changing behaviors to improve your habits and use food records to track your food choices. The fee for the series of courses is $50. Advance registration is required by calling 724-258-1483.

Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, September 9 – Thursday, September 11 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Learn more about food choices, dining out, and how eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Better Breathers Club - Tuesday, September 9 from 2 – 3 p.m., ECC. The Better Breathers Club is free and open to all adults and their family, friends or caregivers who want to learn or share information about living well with breathing issues. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, September 9 at 6 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.

Community CPR Instruction - Wednesday, September 10 at 11 a.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes are offered by Monongahela Valley Hospital in conjunction with Rostraver EMS. The fee for the class is $35 to cover the class and required materials. Healthy Eating Supermarket Tours - Thursday, September 11 from 2 – 4 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Learn how to choose foods at your local supermarket to manage a healthier lifestyle. The tours begin at Healthy Directions, the walk-in health care facility in the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Health care professionals from Monongahela Valley Hospital's Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology will conduct the tours and discuss "Good Fats, Bad Fats" and perform bone density screenings. Cancer Support Group - Monday, September 15 at 2 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all cancer patients and their families. The group meets the third Monday of each month. For additional information, call 724-258-1704.

Prostate Cancer Screening and Education Program - Wednesday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m., ECC. The prostate cancer screening and education program is free. At the screening, men will be offered a digital rectal exam (DRE), the standard test for prostate cancer; a hemocult test and a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test. The screening and education program will be conducted by staff from the MVH Medical Staff and Regional Cancer Center. For more information and to register, call 724-258-1333.

Ostomy Support Group - Thursday, September 18 from 2 – 3:30 p.m., ECC. This support group is free and open to all persons with ostomies and their families and friends. The group meets the third Thursday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1773.

Diabetes Support Group - Thursday, September 18 from 6 – 8 p.m., ECC. This support program is free for people with diabetes, their families and caregivers. The topic will be, "Dealing with Depression." Advanced registration is required by calling 724-258-1483.

Breastfeeding Class - Monday, September 22 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while in the hospital after delivery and when returning home. Many props are used in this class including breast pumps. Partners and grandmothers are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, call 724-258-BABY (2229) ext. 9.

Innovations in Medicine: Stroke Care - Tuesday, September 23 at 6 p.m., ECC. Charles P. Gennaula, M.D., neurologist and MVH stroke program director, will present a free program to discuss stroke prevention, stroke symptoms and post-stroke care. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with strokes and their after-effects. Public First-Aid Instruction - Thursday, September 25 from 6 – 9 p.m., ECC. Adult first aid classes are offered by the hospital in conjunction with Valley Health and Safety Training Center (VHSTC). The $30 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling

Talk With a Doc: Tai Chi - Thursday, September 25 at 7 p.m., Bethel Park Community Center, 5151 Park Avenue. Jose Ramirez-Del Toro, M.D., a physical and sports medicine specialist with The Orthopedic Group, hosts Paul Lam, M.D., founder and director of the internationally renowned Tai Chi for Health Institute. Dr. Lam will present a free program to discuss why doctors recommend tai chi and demonstrate how tai chi can promote wellness, aid rehabilitation and prevent falls. Multiphasic Blood Analysis - Saturday, September 27 from 7 - 10 a.m., ECC. This 36-function screening costs only $25 and is open to the public. Participants are asked to provide the full name and complete address of the physician to whom their test results will be sent afterwards. Testing is by appointment only. The deadline to register is Wednesday, September 25, and registrations must be made Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. by calling 724-258-1282.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day - Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., ECC circular driveway. MVH and the Carroll Township Police Department serve as one local host for the 9th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a convenient and safe way for residents to remove unused drugs from their medicine cabinets. People can merely drive to the circular loop, drop off their medication and leave — no parking, no walking. Remove any personal information from the bottles or packages of expired, unwanted or unused controlled, non-controlled or over-the-counter medications. Liquid products and creams in their containers are acceptable. Sharps and syringes will not be accepted. Donors remain anonymous and police will not request identification.
