Health

When Dorothy Hammond, of the Old Trails Business and Professional Women (BPW) group in Bentleyville, wanted a speaker on fitness for one of the group's meetings, the Charleroi resident called Monongahela Valley Hospital's speakers' bureau for some ideas.

Speaker

Nurse Health Educator Donna Hatalowich of Monongahela Valley Hospital discusses smoking cessation with a local group recently. Mrs. Hatalowich is one of the hospital’s health care professionals who travels the region, giving health-related talks to schools, clubs, churches, civic and community groups.

The hospital staff connected the BPW with Danielle Ricker, a personal trainer from the Center for Fitness and Health in Rostraver. Mrs. Ricker recently spoke to the group of about 25 people at their meeting in Bentleyville. Those in the audience included Students of the Month from Charleroi, Bentworth, Beth Center and California School districts.

"She was a lot of fun and gave a great talk. The kids really liked her, too. I'm already working on a new topic and I'll be calling (the Speakers Bureau) for another speaker," said Mrs. Hammond, a member of the group for 40 years. "We're so glad the hospital likes to work in the community in this way, and off and on over the years, we've used their speakers for many of our programs."

Monongahela Valley Hospital's Speakers' Bureau offers a wide selection of health care professionals to present insightful programs to schools, clubs, churches, civic and community groups, as well as many other businesses and organizations.

Talks on the following topics can be tailored to an organization's needs: arthritis, cancer, diabetes, exercise, general health issues, heart issues, infectious diseases, insurance, osteoporosis, patient rights, rehabilitation, stroke prevention and awareness, tobacco prevention and cessation and wound care.

Stroke, heart issues, arthritis, diabetes, fitness and osteoporosis are frequently requested topics, according to Donna Hatalowich, nurse health educator at MVH, who has been a member of the Speakers' Bureau for 16 years. She has presented programs to groups all over the region.

"This is a valuable service to the community. A health care professional from the hospital will come to your group and provide valuable information to help you make informed health care decisions so you can be your own health care advocate," she said.

There is no cost for the programs. For a brochure, for more information or to schedule a program, contact Thom Kostelac, Community Relations coordinator, at 724-258-1078 or tkostelac@monvalleyhospital.com.
