Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs in November. Many of the events will be held in the hospital's Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.

Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, Nov. 3 from 2 - 4 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.

Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, Nov. 4 – Thursday, Nov. 6 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This is a diabetes self-management class that focuses on counting carbohydrate intake. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Childbirth Preparation Class - Wednesday, Nov. 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 7 – 9 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. A four-week series of prenatal education classes designed to prepare couples for their baby's birth. Topics include the role of a labor coach, signs of labor, pain medication options, vaginal and caesarian deliveries and comfort measures including breathing and relaxation skills. Couples will rehearse what they learn in class to help relieve anxiety surrounding the birthing experience. To register, call 724-258-BABY (2229) ext. 9.

Spirituality at the End of Life - Thursday, Nov. 6 from 7:15 – 11 a.m., ECC. This seminar is ideal for direct caregivers, training and supervisory staff from the entire health continuum — hospitals, home care agencies and extended care facilities, etc. Topics include the similarities and differences between spirituality and religion, and how grieving and end-of-life experiences have changed through generations. A roundtable presentation will also take place with clergy, social workers and funeral service providers, among others. Participants can earn 2.5 CEU credits provided by Home Instead for PCAs, SWs, NHAs and RNs. A continental breakfast will be served and free parking will be provided. To register, call 724-258-1932.

Healthy Eating Supermarket Tours - Thursday, Nov. 6 from 2 – 4 p.m., Healthy Directions at the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Learn how to choose foods at your local supermarket to manage a healthier lifestyle. The tours begin at Healthy Directions, the walk-in health care facility in the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Health care professionals from Monongahela Valley Hospital's Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology will conduct the tours and discuss "Holiday Meal Planning/Diabetes Awareness Day." AARP 55-Alive Refresher Driving Course - Friday, Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., ECC. The nation's first and largest classroom driver improvement course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older. It is intended to help improve skills while teaching accident and traffic violation avoidance. Some insurance companies offer discounts for course completion. The cost is $15 per person for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Pre-registration is required, call 724-258-1333.

Better Breathers Club - Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 2 – 3 p.m., ECC. The Better Breathers Club is free and open to all adults and their family, friends or caregivers who want to learn or share information about living well with breathing issues. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.

Innovations in Medicine: Total vs. Partial Shoulder Replacement - Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m., ECC. Gerson Florez, M.D., orthopedic surgeon, will present a free program to discuss the processes and procedures of total and partial shoulder replacements. Innovations in Medicine: Varicose Veins - Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX, Willow Room. John L. Happel, M.D., vascular surgeon and founder of Happel Laser and Vein Center — the only Accredited Vein Center in Pittsburgh — will present a free program to discuss varicose veins, the treatment risks and the latest treatments for people suffering with varicose veins. Prostate Cancer Support Group - Wednesday, Nov.12 at 6 p.m., ECC. All prostate cancer patients, families and caregivers are invited to attend this free support group. For more information, call 724-292-9404.

Diabetes Support Group Holiday Dinner - Thursday, Nov. 13 from 5 – 8 p.m., ECC. This annual holiday dinner is hosted for individuals diagnosed with diabetes, and a support person may attend. Those interested in attending must call the Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at 724-258-1483 to receive an invitation. Reservations are required, and the cost is $7.50 per person.

Cancer Support Group - Monday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all cancer patients and their families. The group meets the third Monday of each month. For additional information, call 724-258-1704.

The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with strokes and the after-effects. Ostomy Support Group - Thursday, Nov. 20 from 2 – 3:30 p.m., ECC. This support group is free and open to all persons with ostomies and their families and friends. The group meets the third Thursday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1773.

Public First-Aid Instruction - Thursday, Nov. 20 from 6 – 9 p.m., ECC. Adult first aid classes are offered by the hospital in conjunction with Valley Health and Safety Training Center (VHSTC). The $30 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling

Annual Light-Up Night - Monday, Nov. 24 at 6:30 p.m. Join MVH as we kick-off the holiday season with our 30th Annual Light-Up Night in the Hospital's Central Plaza. Enjoy entertainment, hot chocolate, Christmas carols, and an opportunity to tell Santa and Mrs. Claus what's on your Christmas list. Homemade baked goods and raffle tickets for decorative Christmas items will be sold by the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. in the hospital's main lobby.

Breastfeeding Class - Monday, Nov. 24 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This free class is designed for mothers who plan to breastfeed to help them feel more comfortable and confident while in the hospital after delivery and when returning home. Many props are used in this class including breast pumps. Partners and grandmothers are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, call 724-258-BABY (2229) ext. 9.

Adult CPR Instruction - Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 6 - 9 p.m., ECC. Adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes are offered by Monongahela Valley Hospital in conjunction with Valley Health and Safety Training Center (VHSTC). The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling 724-684-9536.

Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, Nov. 26 from 9 - 11 a.m., ECC. This session builds on the education received in the "Managing Your Diabetes" program. Learn more about food choices, dining out, and how personal eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class.
