Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs in January. Many of the events will be held in the hospital's Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.

Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, January 5 from 2 - 4 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.

Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday, January 6 – Thursday, January 8 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. This is a diabetes self-management class that focuses on counting carbohydrate intake. Topics range from how to measure the upward drive each meal has on blood sugar to information on the glycemic index. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Innovations in Medicine: Varicose Veins - Wednesday, January 7 at 6 p.m., ECC. John L. Happel, M.D., vascular surgeon and founder of Happel Laser and Vein Center — the only Accredited Vein Center in Pittsburgh — will present a free program to discuss varicose veins, the treatment risks and the latest treatments for people suffering with varicose veins. Better Breathers Club - Tuesday, January 13 from 2 – 3 p.m., ECC. The Better Breathers Club presents Jim DeLattre of JED Heating to discuss healthy air quality in the home, specifically during the winter. This club is free and open to all adults and their family, friends or caregivers who want to learn or share information about living well with breathing issues. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, January 13 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.

Advanced Carbohydrate Counting - Wednesday, January 14 from 9 - 11 a.m., ECC. This session builds on the education received in the "Managing Your Diabetes" program. Learn more about food choices, dining out, and how personal eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Healthy Eating Supermarket Tours - Thursday, January 15 from 1 – 3 p.m., Fisher Heights Giant Eagle, 1300 Country Club Road, Monongahela. Learn how to choose foods at the supermarket to manage a healthier lifestyle. The tours begin at Healthy Directions, the walk-in health care facility in the Finleyville Giant Eagle. Health care professionals from Monongahela Valley Hospital's Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology will conduct the tours and discuss "Healthy Eating for 2015." Ostomy Support Group - Thursday, January 15 from 2 – 3:30 p.m., ECC. This support group is free and open to all persons with ostomies and their families and friends. The group meets the third Thursday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1773.

Innovations in Medicine: Treatment Options for Knee Pain - Thursday, January 15 at 6 p.m., ECC. Scott Baron, M.D., orthopedic surgeon, will present a free program to discuss the different types of knee pain, possible causes and treatments. Pretzel Sale - Friday, January 23 at 9 a.m., Hospital, Main Lobby. Start your day with a twist. Enjoy a Philly Pretzel Factory soft pretzel. Adult CPR Instruction - Tuesday, January 27 from 6 - 9 p.m., ECC. Adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes are offered by Monongahela Valley Hospital in conjunction with Valley Health and Safety Training Center (VHSTC). The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling 724-684-9536.

Stroke Support Group - Thursday, January 29 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with strokes and the after-effects. The group meets the last Thursday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1455.

Public First-Aid Instruction - Thursday, January 29 from 6 – 9 p.m., ECC. Adult first aid classes are offered by the hospital in conjunction with Valley Health and Safety Training Center (VHSTC). The $30 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling 724-684-9536.
