Monongahela Valley Hospital is sponsoring a variety of informative programs in April. Many of the events will be held in the hospital’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center (ECC) unless otherwise noted.

Breast Cancer Support Group - Monday, April 6 from 2 – 4 p.m., Hospital, 7-East Family Room. This support group is free and open to all breast cancer patients and their families. The group meets the first Monday of each month. For more information, call 724-258-1704.

Innovations in Medicine: Treating Varicose Veins - Monday, April 6 at 6 p.m., ECC. John L. Happel, M.D., vascular surgeon and founder of Happel Laser and Vein Center — the only Accredited Vein Center in Pittsburgh — will present a free program to discuss varicose veins, the treatment risks and the latest treatments for people suffering with varicose veins. Managing Your Diabetes - Tuesday – Thursday, April 7, 8 and 9 from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., ECC. This program is designed to provide tools for daily diabetes self-management. Those attending will learn how to monitor blood sugar, understand diabetes medications and insulin, manage low and high blood sugars, improve his or her lifestyle, better understand carbohydrates and plan meals. The program runs for three consecutive days with either morning or evening classes available each month. Advance registration is required at least one week prior to the start of class. Ripepi’s Winery and Vineyards Wine Tasting - Thursday, April 9 from 4 – 6 p.m. Ripepi’s Winery, 93 Van Voorhis Lane, Monongahela, PA 15063. Satisfy your delicate palate with the rich, flavorful wines made from the grapes of the Ripepi Vineyards and hors d’oeuvres by Patsy’s Catering by Design. Sponsored by the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc., proceeds will be used to enhance services for patients and visitors at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Cost per person is $25. Suicide Bereavement Support Group - Mondays, April 13 and 27 at 6 p.m., ECC. This support group is a four-month program that meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month. The final dates for this series are May 11 and 18. This program is led by a licensed psychologist and is free and open to all those touched by suicide. Registration is required. RSDS Support Group - Tuesday, April 14 from 6 - 8 p.m., ECC. The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) Support Group is free and open to all persons with RSDS or related illnesses. For more information, call 724-929-9492.

Better Breathers Club - Tuesday, April 14 from 2 – 3 p.m., ECC. The Better Breathers Club is free and open to all adults and their family, friends or caregivers who want to learn or share information about living well with breathing issues. This month, a AAA Safety Specialist will speak with regard to traveling with oxygen and other oxygen-related challenges. This group meets the second Tuesday of every month. Alzheimer’s Support Group - Tuesday, April 14 at 6 p.m., ECC. This free support group meets the second Tuesday of each month. It is designed to help the family members, friends and caregivers of those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Attendees discuss the challenges of coping with this disorder as well as techniques for managing stress and methods of encouraging social engagement. Advanced Carbohydrate Counting Wednesday, April 15 – from 6 – 8 p.m., ECC. This session builds on the education received in the “Managing Your Diabetes” program. Learn more about food choices, dining out and how personal eating habits affect your blood glucose control. Completion of the three-day “Diabetes Self-Management Training” is required prior to attending this class. Registration is required at least one week prior to the start of the class. Innovations in Medicine: Is my joint pain from injured cartilage? - Wednesday, April 15 at 6 p.m., Mon-Vale HealthPLEX, Willow Room. Shaka Walker, orthopedic surgeon, will present a free program to discuss the treatments and repair of cartilage injuries without joint replacement. This program is part of MVH's Innovations in Medicine talks featuring physician guest speakers providing medical information to the community. Light refreshments will be served and parking is free. 8th Annual National Health Care Decisions Day - Thursday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Hospital lobby. All adults can benefit from thinking about what their health care choices would be if they are unable to speak for themselves. These decisions can be written down in an “advance directive” so that others know what they are. MVH Director of Patient Relations Renee Hurley, M.Ed., L.P.C., will be to provide information and assistance to the public on completing one’s advance directives: a medical power of attorney and/or a living will. Pedro Aguilar, M.D., neurosurgeon, will present a free program to discuss the non-surgical treatment methods for people suffering from back pain and the challenges that may arise without pain management. MVH Blood Drive - Friday, April 17 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., ECC. Monongahela Valley Hospital, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, is sponsoring a blood drive to benefit local patients. This continuing education program will provide planning guidance to agencies and professionals who may experience extreme disasters and emergency conditions. AARP Driver Safety Beginners’ Course - Thursday, April 23 and Friday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., ECC. The nation's first and largest classroom-based driver improvement course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older. It is intended to help improve skills while teaching accident and traffic violation avoidance. Some insurance companies offer discounts for course completion. Free Skin Screening - Saturday, April 25 from 1 – 3 p.m., TBD. Elizabeth Reisinger, D.O., dermatologist, will perform individual screenings in recognition of National Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection Month. Appointments are limited. Advance registration is required by calling 724-258-1333.

Colorectal Educational Program - Wednesday, April 29 from 1 - 3 p.m., ECC. Monongahela Valley Hospital will offer a free colorectal cancer education and screening in observance of the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Control Month. Health care professionals will provide information during the education portion of the presentation and MVH staff will explain and provide instructions for the take home colorectal screening kit. Stroke Support Group - Thursday, April 30 from 1 – 2:30 p.m., ECC. The Stroke Support Group is designed for patients and caregivers to share, learn and grow with people who can personally relate to the daily challenges and struggles they face dealing with strokes and their after-effects. Infant and Child CPR Class - Thursday, April 30 from 6 - 9 p.m., ECC. Learn how to help a choking baby or small child. Sign up to learn emergency life saving techniques of clearing airway obstructions and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The $40 fee is payable to VHSTC and advance registration is required by calling the Valley Health and Safety Training Center at 724-684-9536.
