Library News

Public Libraries in Washington, Greene and Fayette Counties offer Gale Courses from Gale, part of Cengage Learning. Through this unique program, residents can access instructor-led, online courses from a library website.

Many courses can even be taken online from a public library computer. See course requirements for specific details as well as network policies at your local library.

Courses are offered in the areas of: Accounting/Finance; Business; Computer Applications (must own the required software); Design and Composition; Heath Care and Medical; Language and Arts; Law and Legal; Personal Development; Teaching and Education; Technology; Writing and Publishing; GED test preparation.

Library cardholders can enroll at no cost. Courses run for six weeks, with two new lessons released weekly (for a total of 12), and new sessions beginning every month. The courses are entirely web-based with comprehensive lessons, quizzes, and assignments. A dedicated professional instructor coordinates every course by pacing learners, answering questions, giving feedback, and facilitating discussions.

College credits are not earned, however, courses may qualify for Act 48 if approved by your school district. Upon completion of the course requirements, students can print a Certificate of Completion for submission to their employer or for addition to their resumes.

Residents in Washington, Greene and Fayette Counties can enroll and participate in courses from library computers if not a violation of the library's network or firewall policy or remotely from home computers with a valid library card.

For more information about the catalog of courses offered or to enroll in a course, residents should visit: http://waggin.org/resources/.
