Library News

Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center recently announced the following Upcoming Events.

Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center is now offering pet memorials as a lasting way of remembering a beloved pet.  Donations to the Pet Fund will be used to purchase materials for the Children’s and Teen collection.  Items purchased with these donations will have a special gift plate inscribed with the name of the pet, the pet owner, and donor.  Letters of acknowledgement are sent to the donor and the pet owner.  It’s a great way to acknowledge the importance of your pet and assist the Library in providing new and educational materials for our children.

A “Super Card Party” will be held at Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center, 326 Donner Avenue, Monessen, on Sunday, April 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at the Circulation Desk.  No tickets will be sold at the door.  Snacks, desserts, beverages, and prizes will be provided.  Bring your own card group, your cards to play, and enjoy the afternoon at the library and cultural center.

The annual Spring Book Sale will be held during the month of April in honor of National Library Week!

The Mon Valley Genealogy Forum will meet on Monday, April 18, 2016, at 5:30 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served.  New members welcome!  The group will discuss “Genealogy” in the news and cover new web sites for research.

For our 80th Anniversary, the Library is having a contest to see how many people will check out 80 items from Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center during 2016.  At the end of the year, the patrons who become members of the “80 Club” will be entered in a drawing for a great prize!

Dr. Samuel Hazo will present a program called "The Past Won't Stay Behind You" on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at 6 p.m.  Dr. Hazo will use his own poetry to show how we all try to come to terms and try to understand experiences we have had.  Dr. Hazo is the author of poetry, fiction, essays, various works of translation and four plays.

Come meet the new Children’s Coordinator, Marsha Adams!  She is planning many great future activities!  Join us on Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 11 a.m. - noon   for a “Read, Seed and Eat! Storytime.” It will be geared to ages 3 to 12.  Children will learn about planting seeds/seedlings and return on consecutive Saturdays to nurture plants to maturity and enjoy edible flowers and produce in new and exciting ways.

Storytime is on Mondays starting April 4 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Graphic Novel Book Club is on Wednesdays starting April 6, 2016: for ages 13-18.  Teens will read and discuss various graphic novels by Gene Luen Yang, the American Library Association 2016 Honorary Chair for National Library Week.  Youth will also learn to make your own graphic novel with the help of graphic designers and area artists.

Saturday, April 16, 2016, from 11 a.m. to noon: National Library Week Celebration – “Libraries Transform.”  Parents and children are welcome to celebrate with crafts and the story of “From Caterpillar to Butterfly”.  Children can also help plant a tree for Arbor Day.
