Local People

On January 11, Eugene Eckman, Leading Knight of the Pittsburgh South Hills Elks Lodge 2213 in Bethel Park, traveled to Monongahela to recognize and congratulate new Eagle Scout Nolan Sion, of Boy Scout Troop # 1448.

Mr.Eckman presented two framed award certificates to Nolan. One was from the local lodge in Bethel Park, and the other was from the national grand lodge in Chicago. He also read a personal letter from the national leader of the Elks to Nolan. Nolan also received a personal US flag and a small gold pin signifying the more-than-80-year relationship between the Elks and scouting.

One of the final challenges that must be completed to earn this highest ranking of the scouting world is a community service venture known as the Eagle project. Nolan's project was to design and create a new memorial honoring veterans, who serve and protect our country. The American Legion Post 527 in Rankin is the location of this new memorial, with a granite stone as the centerpiece, a newly erected flag pole, two benches for visitors, and finished landscaping.
