On July 9, 2016, the annual Monessen community picnic and fireworks show was a success, and everyone could agree that this was a good thing for Monessen.

Held at the Monessen boat launch, the picnic began at 4 p.m. with the mayor and friends in attendance.

Mayor Lou Mavrakis said, “We feel good about the picnic,” while Glenda Mavrakis, the mayor’s wife, said, “[The picnic] is a community effort, and I hope it brings people together. We had a wonderful library (vendor), storytime, face-painting, and blowing bubbles for the kids. I think the community all pulled together to make it a success.”

Some of the delicious food featured: hot dogs, hamburgers, cakes, watermelon, cookies, lasagna, taco salad, and cold drinks.

The evening ended with fireworks, and Buzzy Byron, fireworks coordinator, said, “We got a nice day…We will shoot about $5,000 in shells (fireworks).” He noted that this is the 3rd year for the picnic.

The sponsors really came through and showed pride in the city. They are too many to mention, but they include: B & D Fireworks, Buzzy Byron Custom Construction, Billy Hans Construction, Salvation Army, Mayor Lou Mavrakis, Monessen Coke Plant, and Keystone Bakery.

The fireworks, which kicked off at 9:30 p.m., were a beautiful sight. Thank you to the Monessen Mayor, Buzzy Byron, and all the wonderful sponsors for making this an event to remember!
