The annual public meeting of the Greater Monessen Historical Society will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 1 p.m. in the Monessen Heritage Museum, 505 Donner Ave. The financial report will be presented by the treasurer, and the president will review the past year and discuss upcoming events. Board members will be introduced and talk about their areas of responsibility. A message from the William Henry Donner Family will be delivered to the membership. Industrialist William Henry Donner was one of the founders of Monessen and built Monessen’s first industry, the National Tin Plate Company, in 1897, as well as a three story home on Parkway. Light refreshments will be served.
The Orthodox Churches’ Exhibit will be officially opened following the public meeting. The spring exhibit will be available for viewing until July on Wednesdays through Saturday from 10 AM until 3 PM. GMHS is looking for photos and items that highlight the Orthodox Churches of Monessen, in preparation for the Spring Exhibit. Materials can be loaned or donated.
Membership renewals are due for the calendar year of 2017. Individual memberships are $15 for an individual, $20 for a family and $50 for a business.
For the upcoming Easter holiday, the Museum Shoppe is offering two unique books: “Celebrate Easter – Polish Style” and “Celebrate Easter – Slovak Style.” The softcover books discuss the Eastern European customs of the Easter season and offer delicious recipes to try. They are available for a donation of $12 each. Colorful Easter basket covers and religious table runners are also in stock for your holiday table.
GMHS is currently researching two topics, as we plan future programming. If anyone has any information or photos of the former Dudas Maternity Hospital on McKee Avenue or Monessen’s organized crime past, please contact the Museum.
Spring cleaning is upon us! Don’t throw out old photos or items of regional historic interest before checking with us! We also need items for our front show window displays.
