Monessen residents took to the streets on ‘Clean Up Day’ Saturday, April 27 in an effort to show that their hometown matters.

City officials, the city’s Comprehensive Plan with Mackin, and the Salvation Army were mainly responsible for the undertaking of the event, in honor of Earth Day.

Volunteers met first at 9:30 am at Monessen High School, then began work along Ninth St., at 10:00 am. The Monessen Salvation Army hosted a good lunch, and then the work continued. The approximately 20 volunteers that participated cleaned up the areas including 9th St., 6th St., 6th/Knox, and Summit Ave. The sunny, but windy day was a success.

“We hope to get people excited about the future of Monessen, starting with cleaning their streets and neighborhoods,” said Amy Lynn Wiles, Mackin Engineering Comprehensive Plan Project Manager.

Future meetings and events are in the works as part of the city’s ongoing Comprehensive Plan. A big thank you to all of the hard-working volunteers who took part in this event, and to Lowes and Cleanways who donated supplies.
