18th Century Tavern Tunes and Concertos Will Be Performed At Vintage Theatre

A time portal will open to the colonial taverns and genteel parlors of the Mon Valley when the Monongahela and Elizabeth Township historical societies host their third annual concert at the Grand Theatre in Elizabeth 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 15.

Wayward Companions and Pittsburgh Historical Music Society will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at The Grand Theatre in Elizabeth. Elizabeth Township and Monongahela historical societies will host this night of lively music of the 18h Century taverns and parlors.

That’s when the Wayward Companions and Pittsburgh Historical Music Society will transport audiences into the 18th and 19th centuries performing on original style instruments and in historical dress.

“These musicians recreate the experience of past music venues in a lively and engaging manner,” said Miles Richards, a charter member of the Elizabeth Township Historical Society (ETHS), who initiated the partnership with the Monongahela Historical Society (MHS).

The dozen orchestra members and Wayward Companions, an affiliate band, are from the North Hills but Debbie Popp Gilbert, ETHS vice-president recommended the groups after hearing their lively performance at the Whiskey Rebellion Festival in Washington, Pa. last year.

“Like me, many will recognize songs that the Wayward Companions perform like the Scottish ballad ‘The Sky Boat’, the rowdy Irish fiddle tunes like ‘Rocky Road to Dublin’ and ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ that were played in the Colonial American taverns,” Mrs. Gilbert said.

The orchestra invokes an authentic sound using period style instruments and strives to bring the music of the Baroque and Classical periods to the audience as they would have been performed at the time they were written.

Mary Fantozzi, whose 17-year old daughter plays the cello, said the instrumental and vocal selections are in the style that would have been familiar to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and their contemporaries.

“Conductor William Lockard may select Baroque compositions by Antonio Vivaldi and Georg Philipp Telemann or most will recognize the Masterpiece Theatre fanfare by Jean Joseph Mouret,” she said.
