Elizabeth Twp. Historical Society to Host ‘Speak Easy Night’

Charleston dance lessons will be offered at the ‘Speak Easy Night’ hosted by Elizabeth Township Historical Society at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Muddy Waterz, 300 East Smithfield Street, Elizabeth Township.
Elizabeth Township Historical Society (ETHS) will host “A Speak Easy Night” to note the start of Prohibition 100 years ago. This ”fun-raising” and fund-raising event will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Muddy Waterz, 300 East Smithfield Street, in Elizabeth Township.
Roaring ‘20s attire is encouraged to complement the period hors d’oeuvres and DJ playing favorites like “Ain’t Misbehavin”, “Makin’ Whoopee” and “Happy Days are Here Again.” ETHS members Marilyn Backus and Andy Kildow will give Charlesston dance lessons.
“Friends can jump into the photo booth to capture a memory of this night to travel back in time,” said Debbie Popp Gilbert, ETHS vice president who is on the planning committee with ETHS President Linda Bennett, Vaughn Gilbert, Cheryl Copeland, Jeremy McCracken and Heather Cope, owner of Muddy Waterz.
Advance tickets for $10 are available at Muddy Waterz or by calling 412-491-4276. Proceeds will benefit the historical society and restoration of the 1790 Greenock Log House.
‘Wrestling With George’
Dr. Miles Richards will kick off the meeting year by talking about George Washington’s wrestling match that took place with a rowdy local in a 1770 visit along the Youghiogheny River. The tale is from the former ETHS president ‘s book “Wrestling With George and other notables.” The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. with Richards, a retired college professor, talking at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at the Coates House, 5811 Smithfield St., Elizabeth Township. Richards’ book is available online for $14.95 from Amazon, Sunbury press and Barnes & Noble.
‘We Can Do It’ – WWII Traveling Exhibit
World War II uniforms and clothing from the historical society’s vintage collection will be featured during a fashion tea as part of the ‘We Can Dot It!’ WWII traveling exhibit hosted by the Donora Historical Society and Donora Public Library in partnership with the Senator John Heinz History Center of Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Gilbert will present the vintage clothing at the 1:00 p.m. tea on Saturday, March 14, in the Donora Library’s Community Room. Photos will also illustrate the impact that slogans like “We can do it” as well as “Make do and mend” and “Victory in the kitchen” had on the fashion icons as well as women on the home front and front lines.
“We will look at how rival designers like Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli, who helped to liberate women from restrictive clothing before the war, fared during the war and dealt with “The New Look” after the war,“ Mrs. Gilbert said.

RMS Queen Mary Tea
Vintage clothing will also be featured at the RMS Queen Mary Fashion Teas that the historical society will co-sponsor with Britsburgh at the Betsy Shoppe in Elizabeth Township. Two teas are scheduled with the choice of 12 noon Friday or Saturday, April 17 and 18. This program sold-out when it was presented at the Sewickley Heritage Center last year.
Photos and fashions will reveal the luxury liner’s history, the movie icons and royalty who sailed on her and the ghosts which haunt her now moored at Long Beach, Calif. The $25 tickets are available at The Betsy Shoppe or by calling 412-751-6695.
Easter Pie and Nut Roll Sale
The annual Easter pie and nut roll sale will start in March with an April 3 deadline and pick up April 10 at the Coates House.
