The Greater Monessen Historical Society will partner with the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association to commemorate the Independence Day of the First Czechoslovak Republic that was proclaimed in 1918 with a Slovak dinner on Sunday, October 19.

The event will be held at the Monessen Heritage Museum, 505 Donner Ave., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The meal will feature stuffed cabbage, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad and cake. Tickets are $10 and available by calling 724-684-8460.

The annual GMHS Fund Appeal and Membership Drive starts in October. Encourage family members, neighbors, friends and co-workers to join the historical society or give gift memberships as holiday gifts. Membership is $15 a calendar year for an individual or $20 for a family. A business membership is $50. The Heritage Museum depends on donations to function and grow, so watch the mail for the appeal and please be generous.

We are on Facebook under "Greater Monessen Historical Society" and also have a You Tube presence. Check us out today!

The Mon Valley Veterans Exhibit continues to be on display in the Heritage Museum. Hours are Wednesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Admission is free.

The spring exhibit will honor Monessen's Finnish Community. Anyone having photos of Finnish families or events are asked to bring them to the Heritage Museum during regular business hours for scanning, or photo scans can be emailed to Monessen@verizon.net.

GMHS is searching for the Minute Books from former Monessen organizations and clubs. Please consider donating the books to the museum or loaning them to be copied and returned.
