Attendees Get Tips and Treats

During or near National Fire Prevention Week, the Finleyville Volunteer Fire Department annually holds an open house for area residents. The event was held on Sunday October 12. Kids were fascinated by all the big trucks and shiny equipment. They had opportunities to climb on the trucks and sit in the driver's seat for photos.

Firefighters demonstrated how the "Jaws Of Life" equipment is used to cut apart automobiles to rescue entrapped passengers, producing lots of oohs and ahs as the demo car was cut up; this equipment is available to our firefighters who respond to automobile accidents. All kids got a hands-on course on the use of a fire extinguisher by actually putting out a fire. There were plenty of firefighters in full fire-fighting gear getting up close and personal with the kids. This is important, as children have been known to run away from firemen in burning buildings as they look intimidating in their firefighting equipment.
The Social hall was open to visitors, who were treated to hot dogs, cookies and beverages. The kids got firefigher hats, coloring books and other handouts. Thanks go to CT Auto Recyclers, who graciously donated and delivered the car. They got it back - in pieces.
