On September 7, we welcomed retired Ringgold School teacher Scott Frederick, who presented on the Cincinnati Mine Disaster.
On September 13, as part of the Heinz History Center Affiliate Ambassador's Series, Smog Museum Curator Brian Charlton presented "Donora and the 1948 Air Quality Crisis" at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. You can view Charlton's presentation on C-SPAN sometime during the winter months. Charlton is expected to speak again at the Heinz History Center in 2015 on Stan "The Man" Musial.
Once again, the Donora Historical Society was awarded a 2014 McBride-McMaster grant for historical education and preservation from the Washington County Community Foundation. The grant will be used for archival quality storage boxes and envelopes to better preserve our rich collection of Donora artifacts, used as primary source materials for the museum and those doing research on topics such as the 1948 Smog.
The Donora Historical Society was selected as a destination for the Heinz History Center's traveling Civil War exhibit, which has been traveling throughout Western PA since 2012, the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. The exhibit will be held in partnership with the Donora Public Library and will be displayed in the lower level community room for six weeks, March 20, 2015 through April 2015 – the 150th anniversary of the ending of the Civil War. Six weeks of activities are being planned with the exhibit, such as local Civil War displays, presentations, round table discussions, and book signings. School groups and other social groups are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. If you or your group would like to participate in any capacity, please contact the Historical Society to offer your ideas. The presentation scheduled for Monday, November 3 has been changed to "Surprises from the Archives" and will feature artifacts that aren't usually displayed but are unique in their own way. This presentation replaces the "Donora-Webster Bridge" presentation that was previously scheduled and will now be saved to more closely coincide with when the bridge is expected to be imploded in 2015.
The rotating exhibit at the museum will feature Donora war veterans for Veterans Day.
There will be no formal presentation scheduled for Monday, December 1 as we will have our annual Christmas dinner at a restaurant in Donora that has yet to be determined. If you would like to attend, please contact the Historical Society. Each pays for their own.
