The annual public meeting of the Greater Monessen Historical Society will be held on Sunday, March 22 at 1 p.m. in the Monessen Heritage Museum, 505 Donner Ave.

The Finnish Exhibit will be officially opened following the public meeting. Light refreshments will be served. The spring exhibit will be available for viewing until July on Wednesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. daily.

Plans are underway for a Lusitania Dinner to be held sometime in May. Two Monessen residents and a Pricedale resident were traveling on the luxury liner when it was torpedoed by the imperial German Navy during World War I. The Monessen travelers were killed in the tragedy. In additional to remembering the victims of the sinking, the dinner will also commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Greater Monessen Historical Society. Start looking for your Edwardian finery to dress up for the occasion.

The Historical Society will take part in the Nationwide event, "Bells Across the Land: a Nation Remembers" on Thursday, April 9. GMHS is asking Mon Valley churches, schools and public buildings to ring their bells at 3:15 p.m. on April 9, for four minutes, in remembrance of the symbolic ending of the Civil War at Appomattox Courthouse 150 years ago. The event also is a call for basic human rights in the world today.

Membership renewals are due for the calendar year of 2015. Individual memberships are $15 for an individual, $20 for a family and $50 for a business.

For the upcoming Easter holiday, the Museum Shoppe is offering two unique books: "Celebrate Easter – Polish Style" and "Celebrate Easter – Slovak Style." The softcover books discuss the Eastern European customs of the Easter season and offer delicious recipes to try. They are available for a donation of $12 each. A Finnish cookbook has also been added to the Museum Shoppe. It is also $12. Colorful Easter basket covers and religious table runners are also in stock for your holiday table.
