In June, the Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum welcomed Wild Travels TV executive producer and host Harvey Moshman and his crew from Chicago, who were in town to film for a segment on his PBS TV show that airs in the Midwest and hopefully on WQED in Pittsburgh in the near future.
DHS also welcomed Steve Schaeber of the Mobile Air Conditioning Society Worldwide (MACS) near Philadelphia, who was writing an article for ACtion Magazine on the parallels between our current air conditioning emissions and the 1948 Smog.
Amongst the many items that the Donora Historical Society has in its collection are over 80 reels of game film of Mon Valley football teams from 1963 to 1970 along with a few basketball games. They are original 8mm and 16mm films that have yet to be converted to DVD. We are in the early stages of this project and will entertain ideas on how best to handle these films. This project will serve as one of our fundraisers. Send all questions and ideas to the contact info listed below.
We are now adding people to a waiting list for our next Cement City Home and Walking Tours to be held on Saturday, October 3 and then again on Sunday, October 4, both at 1 p.m. No Steelers games are scheduled on those days. The tours start at the museum at Sixth and McKean with a photo presentation. The presenter is Smog Museum curator and Cement City resident Brian Charlton. A walking tour follows in the Historic District to point out various architectural details. The walk concludes by touring the interior of two homes that have a couple of rooms restored to period. In anticipation of the centennial of the founding of Cement City in (1917-2017), we are starting off the festivities by receiving a tourism grant from the Washington County Chamber of Commerce –Visit Washington County, PA. This grant will go to the design and printing of Cement City Home and Walking Tour brochures for future promotions.
