Replacing a lost medal and receiving an award topped the agenda during Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid West Mifflin’s monthly meeting July 30 at the Thompson Run Athletic Association.

Mrs. Betty Bugay of Holy Spirit Parish, West Mifflin, received a replacement for her husband’s Purple Heart, and the post was also awarded an Allegheny County Council Certificate of Achievement by the Honorable Bob Macey, County Council representative for District 9.

“Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate the VFW Post 914 Intrepid West Mifflin for earning All State status,” reads the certificate presented at the meeting. “And we thank Post 914 for their support and assistance to veterans and their families.”  In the photo at right: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid West Mifflin Past Commander Richard L. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 was selected as an All State Post this year after accomplishing a long list of service-oriented goals outlined by the VFW Department of Pennsylvania. Less than 15% of Pennsylvania’s 460 posts were feted during the VFW’s state convention this year for earning the title of All-State Posts. Post 914 Intrepid is also only one of two posts to win this honor from VFW District 29 – an area that includes Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

Prior to the meeting, Mrs. Bugay received a second Purple Heart medal and certificate on behalf of her husband, John E. Bugay. The first medal was lost. Mr. Bugay served in the United States Army from Nov. 1, 1950 until his discharge July 31, 1952. He was wounded with shrapnel in both legs May 20, 1951, while serving on active combat duty during the Korean War.
