Monessen Founders Day of Living History was held on August 15, 2015 in Monessen City Park, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The festival is in celebration of the 150th birthday of Col. James Martinus Schoonmaker. Col. James M. Schoonmaker acquired the site on which Monessen stands from farmers of Rostraver Township in 1894.

The welcoming ceremony began with Greater Monessen Historical Society President Daniel Zyglowicz stating, “We come together to honor the memory of Colonel Schoonmaker.”
Then, Monessen Mayor Lou Mavrakis presented the Main Street Mall plaque (a part of memorabilia) to Zyglowicz.
Mayor Mavrakis said, “It’s good to come back and see the memories. Thank you for inviting me. Have a good day. Enjoy yourselves.”
Zyglowicz said, “I want to thank the vendors here today. We just want to thank everyone, and all who came.”
There included during the day: drilling with the soldiers, Civil War relics, cooking demonstrations over open fires, and aspects of soldier life—their equipment, tents, and uniforms. Ladies from the 11th P.V.I. Co. K. travel to honor veterans. They also had Victorian outfits, great for photo opportunities for visitors.
The schedule also included food vendors, bands, children activities, soldier drills, and information on Civil War times. Although the day was enjoyable and educational, there were few in attendance—many missed out!
