Old sports films are featured by the Donora Historical Society.

High School Football Game Film

Amongst the many items that the Donora Historical Society has in its collection are over 80 reels of game film of Mon Valley football teams from 1963 to 1970.  There are even a few basketball games as well.  They are original 16mm films that have yet to be converted to DVD.  We are attempting to gauge interest on who might be interested in having these films converted to DVD and purchase copies either by individual player, team or fan.

The games feature notable players such as:  Larry Crawford, Bernie Galiffa, Malcolm Lomax and Ken Griffey, Sr. (Donora);  Fred Angerman and Joe Mancinelli (Monongahela);  Gary Seykoski and John Radic (Ringgold);  Larry Hughes and Ken Burkes (Rostraver);  Gary Cramer and Gene Belczyk (Belle Vernon);  Jeff Petrucci and George Carlock (Charleroi);  Joe Zdravecky and Lance Wall (Monessen);  Jim Brumfield (Elizabeth Forward);  and Jack Ham (Bishop McCort), to name just a few.

Some teams have multiple games per season.  The high school teams from the Mon Valley that have at least one game in a given season include:

  • Donora:  63-64, 64-65, 65-66, 66-67, 67-68, 68-69
  • Charleroi:  63-64, 65-66, 66-67, 67-68, 68-69, 69-70, 70-71
  • Rostraver:  63-64, 64-65
  • Belle Vernon:  65-66, 66-67, 67-68, 68-69, 70-71
  • Monongahela:  64-65, 65-66, 66-67, 67-68, 68-69
  • Monessen:  63-64, 64-65, 65-66, 66-67, 68-69, 69-70, 70-71
  • Clairton:  63-64, 64-65, 65-66, 66-67, 67-68, 68-69, 69-70, 70-71
  • Elizabeth Forward:  63-64, 64-65, 65-66, 66-67, 67-68, 68-69, 69-70
  • Brownsville:  63-64, 65-66, 67-68, 69-70
  • Mon Valley Catholic:  65-66
  • Thomas Jefferson:  66-67. 67-68, 68-69, 69-70
  • Ringgold:  69-70, 70-71

Two of the basketball games include:

  • Donora 1968 playoff game against Laurel Highlands featuring Ken Griffey, Sr.
  • Ringgold 1973 playoff game against Valley featuring Tim Stokes, Art Coleman and Ulice Payne.

We’ve had enough interest so far to start converting a few games.  We have not determined a pricing structure yet.  This project will serve as one of our fund raisers.  We’re planning on some possible film sessions to introduce our project to the public and fans.  If you have any interest or have questions on exactly which games we have, please consult the Historical Society by voice mail or email listed below.

Donora-Webster Bridge presentation

Back by popular demand, the presentation on Saturday, November 14th at 1 p.m. will be a repeat of “Remembering the Donora-Webster Bridge.”  The Donora-Webster Bridge was constructed in 1908 and will be razed in 2015.  To honor the bridge, museum curator Brian Charlton we will be sharing stories, showing photos, artifacts and blueprints of the 107 year old structure that once spanned the Monongahela River joining the communities of Donora and Webster.  Besides the presentation, the rotating exhibit already features a collection of Donora-Webster Bridge artifacts and is available for viewing now and through the November.

Christmas Party

There will be no formal presentation scheduled for December as we will have our annual Christmas dinner at Duke’s Cafe restaurant in Donora.  If you would like to attend, please contact the Historical Society.  Each pays for their own dinner.
