A former home of five World War II veterans will be the sponsor and main site for a Nov. 11 Veterans Day collection of new socks to be donated to the Veterans Hospital in Pittsburgh.
This unique home and gathering place called The Good Ol’ Days House is reminiscent of the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s and will be open exclusively from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at 914 Broad Avenue. It will offer complimentary coffee & cake; fried bologna sandwiches in the afternoon; and Stringhill’s pizza in the evening to all who visit and donate a pair of socks for our veterans!
This “Sock It to a Vet” event is the brainchild of Melanie Stringhill Patterson, a local business woman, wife, mother and daughter of a veteran who came up with the idea after reading a recent article about the need for socks by veterans at homeless shelters and hospitals. “For years my aunts, along with local ladies here at our American Legion Ladies Auxilliary, always collected socks for the veterans – but those ladies are gone and many of those organizations lack younger volunteers and donations,” she said.
Seeing that need with a desire to help, Patterson felt her unique nostalgic vacation house would be the perfect place to collect sock donations for both men and women on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Patterson plans to ‘match’ all socks donated at the house that day with a ‘matching’ donation of socks from The Good Ol’ Days House! Several merchants and small business owners have joined in and will also be participating in collecting new socks: Darla Suz Boutique, Vintage & Vines, BeeGraphix, Broad Avenue Treasures and Antiques on Broad – all located along Broad Avenue in North Belle Vernon, right off Interstate 70, Exit 42.
Please join us in showing your appreciation to our military heroes and in saying thank you to all who have served this great country. For more information, contact Melanie Patterson at 724-331-3654.
