“Thank you, emergency responders” was the theme of State Representative Rick Saccone’s 5th annual dinner on February 19 honoring police, emergency medical personnel and firefighters.

He had as guests emergency responders from throughout his 39th District. Each group received a certificate of appreciation from Representative Saccone and the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives. Mr. Saccone, in his speech, mentioned, “Duty is foremost to the people sitting in this room, and they stand out in stark contrast to their friends and neighbors who depend on their unselfish service to their communities.” He added, “I am dumbfounded at the magnitude of the services provided by these men and women to their communities. On behalf of Pennsylvania – I thank you all.”

A guest speaker, Louise Urban, President and CEO of Jefferson Hospital, echoed Representative Saccone’s comments. She said she’s come to know many of the emergency medical personnel working in the communities surrounding Jefferson Hospital. She added, “The area emergency medical responders handle their work professionally and are passionate about their work.” Then, speaking directly to the audience, she said, “You all mean so much to your communities – thank you.”

Keynote speaker Mike Sharon, the Federal Preparedness Coordinator for FEMA Region III, spoke on the value of emergency responders from a much broader perspective. FEMA Region III supports individuals and communities in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia and West Virginia. Mr. Sharon’s entire career has been in emergency preparedness and management. He’s been exposed to many natural and man-made disasters and speaks from experience when saying, “Emergency Responders make all the

difference in handling bad situations throughout Pennsylvania.” He added, “FEMA exists to support your efforts in making sure you’re ready to face all emergencies. On behalf of FEMA – thank you for keeping our communities safe.”

Representing the local community, Julianna Jones, UNM Miss Northern States Teen and a student of Elizabeth Forward High School, personally thanked all the emergency responders in the room, handing them a small card simply stating, “Honor, Courage, Sacrifice – Thank you for your service.” Also from the local community, singer Gabrielle Nicola performed before and after dinner with songs appropriate to the occasion. Allegheny Health Network sponsored this event.
