Mid-Mon Valley Attorney Alan Benyak, a former Army major who served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, is seeking the Democratic nomination for the State House in the 49th Legislative District, which includes communities in Fayette and Washington Counties.

Benyak, 52, of Carroll Township, has a private practice based in Charleroi, where he is the Borough solicitor. Additionally, he is legal counsel to the Municipal Authority of Belle Vernon. He also is a board member and officer of the Donora Public Library and has served as a solicitor for numerous other boroughs, townships, and community organizations in the area.

“I have lived, worked and served the residents of this district throughout my life. I am honored that people whom I respect have asked me to run because they believe I can be a strong advocate for our interests in Harrisburg,” Benyak said. “Our region is finally on the cusp of rebuilding and rebranding itself after 30 years of decline. Moving forward, we need someone ready to fight for our interests, especially our families, our seniors and our veterans.”
The seat is held by Representative Peter J. Daley, who is not seeking re-election. The Democratic primary will be held on April 26th.

“I was honored to serve my country and my fellow military personnel as a lawyer, and I am proud to have built a successful law practice. My background gives me a mature, reasonable approach to public policy that I think we need in the state house,” Benyak said.

Benyak earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. He was the recipient of an Army ROTC Scholarship which helped him further his education following his graduation from Southmoreland Senior High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Waynesburg University in 1985 and a law degree from Capital University in 1988 before graduating from The Judge Advocate General’s School in the Charlottesville, Virginia.

Over the course of his professional career, Mr. Benyak has been active on many boards and organizations including Community Action Southwest Head Start; Community Ambulance Service, Inc. and Washington Township Area Senior Citizens. He is a member of the Washington and Pennsylvania Bar Associations, American Legion Post 22, the Masonic Lodge and the Sons of Italy.
