Highlights of the January 5 meeting for Canonsburg Borough are as follows:

Participating in the swearing-in ceremony of Canonsburg's new police chief were stepson Dylan Dzikowski, former Chief R.T. Bell, new Police Chief Alex Coghill, wife Kim Serafini Coghill, and Canonsburg Mayor David Rhone.

Alex Coghill was sworn in as the new Canonsburg chief of police to replace retiring Chief R.T. Bell.

Council took initial steps to hire a new part-time police officer, Brian Dupree of Canonsburg, after interviewing him and performing background checks.
Council acknowledged long-time service of Deputy Chief of Police Harold Coleman, who is also retiring. Coleman has served the community on the police department since the 1990s.
A parking meter rate of $0.25 per hour was established in an effort to improve downtown business activity.
Vice-Borough Council Chairman Rich Russo announced that they are pushing hard to put in place a downtown plan to enhance business development.

In other business at their January 5 meeting Canonsburg Borough Council:

Vice-Borough Council Chairman Rich Russo elaborated on sources of income the borough may use to promote downtown business development. Among them were funds from Meadows Casino gaming revenues issued through the county/state. Russo also mentioned that the borough continues to derive revenue from their lease of borough-owned property to Range Resources.
Councilman John Severino said that as head of the Parks and Recreation Department he will do everything he can to clean up and beautify downtown areas in order to try to bring in new business to the downtown area.
Other committee reports included those from Fran Coleman – Administration & Finance, Joe McGarry – Public Safety, John Bevec – Public Works and Harvey Treschow – Borough Engineer.
Mayor David Rhone elaborated on the December monthly public safety report. He also said that his office was committed to downtown improvement. “We will need help to fill store fronts,” he said.
There was full attendance at the meeting including Councilman Timothy Bilsky and Borough Council Chairman John Ewing.
