A meeting was held and hosted by South Park Board Supervisor Dave Buchewicz and his wife, Joan, on July 29 in the South Park Community Room, with the purpose of introducing the democratic candidate for Matt Smith’s recently vacant Senate seat, Heather Arnet, to the community.

Several public officials came to support and speak on behalf of Arnet and her candidacy. Among those officials who attended were the Chair of the Mt. Lebanon Democratic Committee, Michelle Zmijanac, Senator Jay Costa, and Magisterial District Judge, Hugh Fitzpatrick McGough.

Those who attended the meeting had the opportunity to have a one-on-one question and answer session with Arnet. Some of the topics discussed were education budget cuts and property taxes. Arnet also expressed her desire to help the hard-working families of local communities.

“When you think about family, that’s about being sure we have quality schools and we’re investing in education. That we’re investing in early childhood programs, that we’re taking care of our seniors in their most vulnerable years and making sure that our property taxes aren’t so high that grandparents who have paid off their mortgage decades ago can’t afford to stay in their own homes because they can’t afford the property taxes on those homes,” Arnet said.

Arnet is currently the CEO of the Women and Girls Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that strives for gender equality.

“Our whole mission is to achieve equality for women and girls. We mostly focus on public policy issues and advancing them at the local, city, county and state levels,” Arnet said.

The election for the new state senator will take place on November 3, 2015 and Arnet will be running against Republican Guy Reschenthaler.

“It was really worthwhile to Joan and I learn that Heather is an exceptionally qualified candidate and has life experiences to improve state government, helping the residents of the 37th and the state,” Buchewicz said.
