The students, parents, and staff at Ringgold Elementary School North in Finleyville responded in a huge way to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
Mrs. Susan Toth, fourth grade teacher, requested permission from Mr. Ross Ference and Mr. Mark Alberts, co-principals, to conduct the drive at the school. In just three days, the school’s office was overflowing with donations that soon spread into the hallway. “Each day, it became more overwhelming to see the generosity of our school community,” Toth said. Angelina Hefner, a fourth grade student commented, “It made me feel good to walk in the school and see everything piling up to give to those people.”
A group of volunteers, led by Mrs. Toth’s childhood friend, Paul Kennedy of New Eagle, began to organize a help drive earlier in the week to transport donations to Texas. “Wow! Massive donations from Ringgold Elementary North,” Kennedy said. “Thank you students, parents, and Mrs. Toth.” Kennedy led a caravan of seven trucks and trailers to the flood-ravaged areas. “I can’t imagine what those kids and adults will say when our stuff gets delivered to them,” said Helena Green, 10 years old.
Mrs. Toth’s fourth grade students carried the hundreds of bags and boxes of donated water, food, baby care items, pet necessities, and clothing outside where they filled a livestock trailer.
“My heart is full today,” Toth said. “Some lessons just can’t be taught from a textbook!”
