Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, the Kurt J. Lesker Company, and Clairton Elementary have partnered to launch the Kurt J. Lesker Workplace Mentoring Initiative, an innovative onsite approach to traditional 1-to-1 mentoring programs.

Clairton 4th graders in new mentoring initiative

The program matches 4th grade students from Clairton Elementary with employees from the Kurt J. Lesker Company, the leading global provider of high-quality vacuum products and systems, who will provide guidance to at-risk children throughout the school year.

The program provides students a unique opportunity to explore what’s happening behind the scenes at the company, learn about the site’s different departments, ranging from human resources to IT, and participate in STEM activities. The goal is to provide each mentee with a supportive adult role model, foster the motivation to complete high school, and help them prepare for what comes after.

Principal Debra Maurozio stated, “Clairton Elementary was extremely excited when we first learned of the possibility of Big Brothers Big Sisters coming into our school. The workplace component is a different twist on the traditional program and provides an added benefit to the students. Students were thrilled to find out field trips to Kurt J. Lesker would occur regularly. We are hoping each ‘Little’ will develop strong bonds with a caring ‘Big’ while learning critical skills for becoming career- and college-ready.”

The program officially launched Friday, October 6, 2017.
