‘Voices of the Mon Valley: Oral History and Local Resources’ Scheduled at Manderino Library

The rich history of the Mon Valley will be showcased at California University of Pennsylvania as faculty, students, local libraries and historical societies participate in “Voices of the Mon Valley: Oral History and Local Resources.”

Through a grant from Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, Cal U faculty the departments of history, social work, sociology and the library were trained on topics such as gathering oral histories, paper storage and photo digitization.

Students and about 20 people from area historical societies and local libraries also attended the training.

The exhibit will feature the fruits of that effort, as students present projects such as the oral histories of Mon Valley ethnic groups. The Uniontown Public Library, Donora Historical Society and Smog Museum, Greater Monessen Historical Society and California Area Historical Society will exhibit materials from their collections.

The historical materials will be on display at Cal U’s Manderino Library through April 10.

Guest speaker will be Dr. Lou Martin, assistant professor of history at Chatham University. Martin specializes in Appalachian history and culture.

Community members are welcome to view the exhibit in Manderino Library. Hours are:
• Monday: 5-7 p.m.
• Tuesday and Thursday: 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
• Wednesday: 6-8 p.m.
• Friday: 3-5 p.m.
• Saturday: 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
• Sunday: 2-5 p.m.
• The gallery will be closed April 6.
