CASTLE afterschool students, grades 5-8, represented Clairton at Creek Connections’ 2016 Pittsburgh Area Research Symposium, held at Camp Kon-O-Kwee in Frombell, PA on April 8.

The annual symposium is a day-long event, highlighting students from the Pittsburgh area who have participated in Creek Connections’ water quality testing program. In order to attend the event, students are required to complete a research project focusing on environmental science.
This year, students working with CASTLE partner, Sense of Place Learning, studied Pennsylvania’s native wildlife. For their research projects, students created informational displays about each animal group (fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates and mammals) and then made interactive games designed to engage other students in learning about PA native wildlife. The games were a big hit with symposium attendees, and included the
Lunch was provided by Creek Connections, and an awards celebration capped off the day. Each student received a certificate of participation and 5th grader Quenten Sutton won a Creek Connections t-shirt for correctly identifying a species of trout.
