Seniors

By Jill Brown

Monessen Center for Active Adults on Grand Blvd. held an Open House on September 14 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as part of National Senior Center Month.

MSC line dancers
The Scottdale Rockerettes were part of the entertainment at the Open House, line dancing to popular songs.

Monessen Site Manager Fumiko Green said, “Today is all about promoting what type of activities are offered—to let people know what the Center is all about.”

Green continued, “We want to eliminate the stigma of Monessen Senior Center. The activities we are promoting are active and social ones for those age 50 and up. What we do more than anything is welcome people. What we serve here for lunch is becoming healthier, more nutritional.”

Throughout the day at the Open House, the Area Agency on Aging was available to enhance the quality of life as the Center does through health and wellness. The Center offers some of the following activities: Physical—walking, chair exercising; Mental—card games, discussions; Emotional—arts and crafts.

Live entertainment included the Jerry D Band playing polka and oldies music, which had people up and dancing. The Scottdale Rockerettes showed their line dancing skills and entertained the crowd.

Lunch was a buffet of fruit, sausage with peppers and onions on a hoagie roll, and cake. The cake was donated by Tripil Services PAS (Personal Assistance Services) in Washington and came from Giant Eagle. A raffle from the store was held. Information from Rite Aid was available. Hamilton Chiropractic from Belle Vernon offered free evaluations and back massages.

Green concluded, “We want people to get to know each other and say ‘hello’ to everyone. The major reason to be healthy is to be happy.”

You may visit the Monessen Center for Active Adults anytime Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and join in the fun and healthy lifestyle. Also, like them on Facebook at Monessen Senior Center.
