Our first Chef Showdown, held Tuesday, May 10, at Off the Wall Arts was based loosely on the hit show Chopped and featured three local chefs:, Chef Michael Rygiel of Chef G Restaurant and Catering, Chef Christine Somales of Sweet & Spicy Culinary, and Ron Pudlowski, home chef and owner of Hot Shotz Photography.

Chef Christine Somales, Ron Pudlowski, and Chef Michael Rygiel

Each chef was given a basket of ingredients, which included one “off the wall” item and were given specific time to complete an appetizer, main dish and dessert. “Celebrity judges” Jeremey Sellew, Mon Valley Independent; Chef Trey Lightowler, River House Café; and Gina C. Lynn, GRC judged each based on taste, presentation and use of ingredients.

During each presentation, Greg Winslow of Winslow Winery offered a wine pairing suggestion for the dish. The audience enjoyed the action-packed, fun competition created by the chefs, and MC Tom Soltis did an excellent job with the commentary and keeping things lively.

Proceeds from the event benefited the Greater Washington County Food Bank. The event was designed to showcase GRC members working together. Watch for details on a second Chef Showdown planned for the fall.
