Library News

This summer, a new and exciting opportunity awaits you at select Allegheny County libraries.

Starting in June, Whitehall Public Library and other select branches of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will collaborate with the Senator John Heinz History Center and its affiliate program to offer library card holders access to free admission to five unique sites: Senator John Heinz History Center, Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum, Mt. Pleasant Historical Society in Ohio, Old Economy Village in Beaver County, and West Overton Village and Museum in Westmoreland County.

This pilot program, nicknamed “experience kits,” provides free admission as well as additional educational information and suggestions on other things to do in the area - a pre-planned road trip in a bag! The experience kits can be checked out for up to one week at a time, and each kit grants borrowers admission for up to four individuals.

Although many families have been fortunate enough to visit the Heinz History Center, the Smithsonian-affiliated museum also operates the History Center Affiliates Program (HCAP), which includes more than 125 regional historical societies and organizations dedicated to preserving their local history. Participating libraries are excited to offer this unique opportunity to introduce new historical sites and accompanying educational opportunities to their patrons.

As a participating library, Whitehall Public Library has planned a kick-off event to promote its selected historical sites on June 7, 2018 at 1 p.m. Please call 412-882-6622 with questions.
