Library News

To honor the veterans of the Mon Valley, Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center, in cooperation with the Greater Monessen Historical Society, is showing notable war movies each Wednesday in the Library Meeting Room at 1 p.m.

Board members Susanna Swade and Candis Elyanich Kelley are also reading passages of letters written by local servicemen during their war service. In addition, photographs of local veterans from the Historical Society are on display at the library. Free popcorn is served during the movies. The movie schedule for October is:

  • Oct. 1 – “Sands of Iwo Jima”
  • Oct. 8 – “Patton”
  • Oct. 15 – “The Glenn Miller Story”
  • Oct. 22 – “To Hell and Back”
  • Oct. 29 – “Bombers B-52”

Monessen Public Library & Cultural Center will be closed on Monday, October 13th (Columbus Day) for staff training in Greensburg.

The Mon Valley Art Club’s annual art exhibit will conclude on October 9. 150 pieces of art contributed by 24 members are on display in the library. This year’s theme is “What Makes You Happy”.

“Teen Read Week” is being celebrated during the week of October 12-18. Visit the library to see the many new teen books that have been purchased for the collection and check out a few to read at home.

“National Friends of the Libraries Week” is October 19-25. Our local Friends group is active in fundraising for the library and helps sponsor the children’s activities and programs. Please consider joining the group for a $5 donation. Stop at the circulation desk to pick up an application.

Please help support the library! Stop in and purchase a $1 chance on the monthly raffle basket. There are also $2 tickets for the $1,400 monthly drawing on the 4th of each month through the PA Lottery. Need a quick gift? Get a “Book Lovers Calendar” or an Enjoy Coupon Book to benefit the library through your purchase.

The “Beginning Genealogy Class” with Claire McMullen will meet on Saturday, October 11, at 11 a.m. in the upstairs PA Room. She will continue the topic of “Wills” with the second part of the series, which began in September.

The Mon Valley Genealogy Forum will meet on Monday, October 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the downstairs Reading Area. The speaker for the month will be Linda Lacey, a local genealogist, who has spent several years researching her family tree through various states. She will discuss the pitfalls and triumphs of her research. She recently published a volume of her research as well as a family cookbook.

Fall Storytime with Miss Allysa Gigliotti meets on Monday evenings at 6 p.m. in the Children’s Room. The themes for October are:

  • October 6 – “Buttons”
  • October 13 – “Native Americans”
  • October 20 – “Photographs”
  • October 27 – “Halloween Dress-Up Party”

There will be a special craft session on Wednesday, October 24, at 5 p.m. when trick-or-treat bags will be made.
