‘Happy Hallo-wine: Eat Drink and Be Scary’ Wine Tasting Event

The Pleasant Hills Library will celebrate its 69th anniversary on Saturday, October 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. with a wine and cheese tasting event titled ‘Happy Hallo-wine: Eat Drink and Be Scary.’

The evening will include vampire red and ghostly white wines to sample, a souvenir wine glass, cheeses with scary names for pairing, assorted appetizers and desserts, and non-alcoholic beverages. The evening will also include an art show and sale featuring the works of many talented local artists, a Chinese auction, jewelry sale, costume contest, live entertainment and more.

Local artists are invited to participate in the art show by returning an entry form to the library by October 8. Forms are available on the website at pleasanthillslibrary.org. Tickets for the event are $25 and are available in the Library, on the website using PayPal or at the door. All proceeds benefit the Library.

‘How to Help Your Children Pursue Their Natural Gifts’ Parenting Event

Nancy Jean Morrison, an author and teacher for 35 years will present ‘How to Help Your Children Pursue Their Natural Gifts’ on Thursday, October 2 at 7 p.m. The program will examine ways to expose children to a variety of activities to strengthen their natural talents. Recommended for parents, grandparents, caregivers and teachers of young children.

Conversation Salon

Opinions welcome. The Pleasant Hills Library will sponsor a Conversation Salon on Friday, October 3 from 1 - 3 p.m. The group explores current events and other topics of interest for discussion. Newcomers encouraged to participate. Refreshments served.

Murder and Mayhem Mystery Book Club

The Pleasant Hills Library Murder and Mayhem Mystery Book Club will meet on Monday, October 6 at 1 p.m. This month’s selection is The Sherlockian by Graham Moore. Newcomers welcome. Extra copies of the book are available at the front desk.

Alzheimer’s Workshop

The Library will present an Alzheimer’s Workshop on Tuesday, October 7 from 6-8 p.m. led by Jay Cincinnati of Home Instead. The program will include information on this disease and activities that can be used to interact with a friend or family member with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Registration requested.

‘Fahrenheit 451’ Screening

All adults and teens are welcome to a viewing of the 1966 film ‘Fahrenheit 451’ starring Julie Christie on Monday, October 13 at 6:30 p.m. as part of The Big Read. Following the film participants are welcome to take part in a brief discussion of the themes of the book and film of censorship and questioning the government.

Writers and Lifestory Writers Group

The Writers and Lifestory Writers Group will meet on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m. The group welcomes published and amateur writers in any genre to participate and offers support, encouragement and critique. This month’s assignment is to ‘imagine being in a cheap hotel when the lights go off and stay off” or bring a sample of your current writing to share with the group.

Pleasant Hills Library Book Group

The Pleasant Hills Library Book Group will meet on Monday, October 20 at 7 p.m. This month the Library is partnering with CCAC and other community groups to promote the Big Read selection, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Extra copies of the book are available at the front desk. Newcomers welcome.

‘Giving Wisely to Charities’ Lecture

The holidays usually mean giving more to worthy charities, but how do you know if your charity is trustworthy and not fraudulent or a scam? The Library will sponsor ‘Giving Wisely to Charities’ on Tuesday, October 21 at 7 p.m. presented by the Better Business Bureau.

Pumpkin-carving Workshop

The Pleasant Hills Library will present a pumpkin-carving workshop on Monday, October 27 at 6 p.m. Bring your own pumpkin to carve and leave the mess at the library. Evan Gealy, local artist, will present a demonstration on pumpkin-carving techniques and provide jack o’ lantern patterns along with tips and suggestions for doing your own carving. This is a family program. Registration requested.
