Library News

The Pleasant Hills Library will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Saturday, November 7 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. with a wine and cheese tasting event titled “Hollywood & Wine:  1940s Glamour in Black and White . . .and Reds.” 

The evening will feature a 1940s Hollywood theme and will include a variety of wines from celebrity vineyards, a souvenir wine glass, a variety of interesting cheeses for pairing, and assorted appetizers and desserts.  There will also be a non-alcoholic punch and other beverages for non-drinkers.   In addition, the evening will include an art show and sale featuring the works of many talented local artists, Chinese auction, jewelry sale, a live DJ playing music from the ‘40s and more.  

Local artists are invited to participate in the art show by returning an entry form to the library by October 21.  Forms are available on the website at pleasanthillslibrary.org or in the Library. 

Tickets for the event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door and are available in the Library, or on the website using PayPal.  All proceeds benefit the Library.

The Mayhem and Murder Mystery Book Club meets Monday, November 2 at 1 p.m.  This month’s selection is Immaculate Deception by Iain Pears. Newcomers welcome. Extra copies of the book available at the front desk.   Killer desserts served.

On Thursday, November 5 at 5 p.m., the Pleasant Hills Garden Club will plant 75 flower bulbs on the Library grounds to commemorate the Club’s 75th anniversary.  Learn the proper method of preparing the ground and planting bulbs in the fall so that you have a beautiful floral display in the spring.

The Conversation Salon meets on Friday, November 6 from 1 to 3 to discuss a variety of current issues and other topics of interest.  Newcomers with opinions and open minds are welcome to participate. Refreshments served.

The Writers Group meets Tuesday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m.  The group is open to beginning and professional writers in any genre.  Bring a writing sample to share with the group.

Book Talk with Dr. Jack Aupperle reviews The Wright Brothers by David McCullough on Friday, November 20 at 10:30 a.m. 

The Book Group meets Monday, November 16 at 7 p.m.  This month’s selection is Small Blessings by Martha Woodroof. Extra copies of the book are available at the front desk.  Newcomers welcome.

Just in time for the Holidays, learn to play Canasta, the rummy game that swept the country in the late 1940s and 1950s, on Thursday, November 12 at 6:30 p.m. White gloves, hats and ties not required.
