Library News

December events announced for Pleasant Hills Library.

Ligonier Valley resident, Larry Barth, will discuss his new book, Birds, Art & Design, a stunning retrospective of his life's work, including sculptures from museum exhibits and rarely seen pieces from private collections, on Wednesday, December 2 at 7 p.m. His discussion will emphasize his love of birds and design and how the two fit together. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Celebrate the winter holidays at the library on Thursday, December 3 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.! Enjoy stories, games, crafts, snacks, and a special visit from the man in red! A $2 donation per child and a half dozen cookies per family is requested (will be collected at the event). PLEASE REGISTER by calling the library.

Opinions welcome! The Conversation Salon will meet Friday, December 4 from 1-3 p.m. The group discusses a variety of topical subjects in a friendly and open-minded atmosphere. Refreshments served. Newcomers welcome.

The Murder and Mayhem Mystery Book Club will meet Monday, December 7 to discuss Jane and the Twelve Days of Christmas by Stephanie Barron. Newcomers welcome. Bring your holiday spirit and some cookies to share.

The Writers Group will meet Tuesday, December 8 at 6:30 p.m. The group provides support and critique for professional and beginning writers in all genres. Bring a sample of your writing to share with the group and an appetizer or dessert. Newcomers welcome.

Pleasant Hills resident and Senior Pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Brentwood, Eric Riesen, will discuss his new book, A Catechism for the Curious, on Wednesday, December 9 at 7 pm. The book has received significant endorsements from leading theologians and members of the clergy. This is an opportunity for those of any faith or no faith to gain a better understanding of the Christian faith. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Let your creativity run wild on Saturday, December 12 at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. while you use a variety of edible materials to decorate a pre-made gingerbread house! A $3 donation per house decorator is requested. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED by calling the library.

Bundle up this winter with a snowflake scarf. Learn to make and assemble this elegant but simple crocheted design on Monday, December 14 at 1:30 p.m. Bring your own sport or lightweight yarn and a size F crochet hook or pay a $4 fee for yarn at the class. Knowledge of single and double crochet stitches is helpful. Registration required by calling the library.

Relive the excitement of old-time Radio Theater on Tuesday, December 15 at 7 p.m. when the Pleasant Players Reader’s Theater performs two holiday-themed radio scripts from ‘My Friend Irma’ and ‘Father Knows Best.’ These heartwarming family comedies combine the right touch of humor and Christmas spirit to put anyone in the holiday mood, complete with sleigh bells and Christmas carols.

Join the Book Group on Monday, December 21 at 7 p.m. to discuss Christmas Hope by Anne Perry. Extra copies of the book are available at the front desk. Newcomers welcome.

Just in time for the holidays, learn to play canasta, the rummy game that swept the country in the late 1940s and 1950s, on Thursday, November 12 at 6:30 pm. White gloves, hats and ties not required.
