Come and celebrate Hogmanay, a fun-filled day that pays tribute to Oliver Miller’s Scottish heritage at the Oliver Miller Homestead on Sunday, December 4 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The festivities will feature Scots dancing, games, food, and talents.

While Christmas was not observed as a festive occasion in the 18th century, the Scots definitely celebrated New Year’s Eve and day as times of celebration. We will celebrate the end of another successful year of events as we look forward to a new year in 2017.

To observe this day, the Pittsburgh Country Scottish Dancers will perform traditional dances in the barn, and guests will be invited to join in the fun.

  • A string quartet from Bethel Park High School music department will entertain guests in the log house.
  • Guests may participate in typical Scots games outdoors if weather permits and in the Stone House.
  • A Scottish tea will be on display in the keeping room with the Scottish favorites of haggis, tatties and neets being prepared in the kitchen,

Join the Millers and their friends at the Stone House to learn more about the New Year’s customs and to help the Millers celebrate by paying off debts, returning borrowed goods, firing rifles to shoo off the old spirits and to see who will be the first footer to enter the house and bring the Millers good luck for the year. Share a toast to the new year with a wee dram of cider and the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

This is truly a special day at the Homestead and we look forward to seeing you.

Admission is only $2 and more information is available at our web site, olivermillerhomestead.org.
