Church Giving Back to the Community by Holding a Community Picnic

By Heather Latorre

Did you know that former United States President Harry S. Truman delivered a speech a Mingo Church? Did you know the church is 235 years old?

MingoCreek
Mingo church is one of the most historic churches west of the Allegheny Mountains, the current sanctuary was constructed in 1831.

On Sunday, October 1, 2017 the Mingo Creek ECO Presbyterian Church will hold a Community Picnic from 3 - 5:00 p.m. Come out to learn about the church’s history with free food and fun for the kids. Our local first responders will be honored guests as well. The event will be held rain or shine at 561 Mingo Church Road, Finleyville, on the corner of route 88 and Mingo Church Road.

Mingo church is one of the most historic churches west of the Allegheny Mountains. In the days when Indians hunted in this area, adventurous settlers counted among their blessings the right to worship God. As early as 1774 the bravest of the Mingo Creek settlers gathered near the present site of the Mingo Church, posted sentries, and began the services of Christian worship which have continued there uninterrupted to this day. Services were even held in bitter winter weather until a place was selected which partially sheltered the congregation, and where a log pulpit was erected and logs furnished those in attendance a seat. In 1788 the Old Mingo Meeting House was erected on the site of the present-day manse. The current sanctuary was constructed in 1831, with the curved wall added in 1903. American evangelist Billy Sunday held revivals in this pulpit and yes, President Harry S. Truman did deliver a speech here as well.
