Historical Societies, glassware enthusiasts, and other interested residents of Washington County and the Mon Valley are cordially invited to attend the October 16 program meeting of the Charleroi Area Historical Society. With Charleroi's own rich history of glassware-making, we are excited to have Jerry Cooper of the National Duncan Glass Society as our guest speaker. He is the vice president of the local chapter.

Jerry will share the history of the George Duncan and Sons Glass Company. Mr. Duncan was a partner with Daniel C. Ripley from 1865 until Mr. Ripley's death in 1873. Mr. Duncan bought the company and renamed it George Duncan and Sons. They produced table- and barware at 10th and Carson Street in Pittsburgh until 1893 when the factory burned down. The heirs of Mr. Duncan then relocated to Washington, PA and built a new factory, remaining open until its closing in 1955.

Jerry will be bringing examples of the glass produced. Those planning to attend the evening's program and have pieces of Duncan glassware are encouraged to bring them for all to see and admire.

CAHS, Inc. holds program meetings on the third Monday evening of the month, March through October in Riverside Place, 303 Chamber Plaza in the SPHS building. Light refreshments are always served. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; program begins at 7 p.m.

For more information, call the Society headquarters, the historic Gaoziou Print Shop at 724-483-4961.
