Volunteers and Groups Encouraged to Assist with Removal

The members of American Legion Post 28 and VFW Post 1190 in Monessen will begin to take down the flags from the cemeteries in Monessen on Saturday, November 17 starting at Grandview Cemetery at 8:30 AM. Anyone who is available to help with the removal is asked to call the Committee Chairman, Perry George at 724-747-8536.

The youngest of the Veterans is in his 60’s and the oldest in their 90’s, so it is very difficult for them to work on the steep hillsides of some cemeteries. There is an estimated 1,700 flags in five different cemeteries across Monessen that will need to be removed. This is not an easy task and probably cannot be accomplished in one day, so if you would like to help, please contact us.

On November 19, the flags will be properly disposed of during a flag burning ceremony at 6:00 PM at the Herman Mahalich boat launch park in Monessen. If you have any flags that need disposed of, place them in the flag disposal bin located outside of the Monessen Public Library, or bring the flag with you to the burning ceremony. The public is invited to attend.

New flags will be put back up on the grave sites sometime in May 2019 prior to Memorial Day. When the exact date is determined, we will let the public know. Assistance would be greatly appreciated in putting the flags back up as well.
