In the month of March 2020, many children in Monessen had to stay home from school due to the COVID-19 virus concerns. This meant that the children would not receive their normal school lunches.

So the Salvation Army, located at 308 Schoonmaker Ave. in Monessen, with Capt. Sue Thwaite and their volunteers stepped up to help. The Salvation Army handed out hot meals for dinner at nine locations on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, between 4:00 and 6:30 pm. On one Monday, Salvation Army volunteers served 141 children hot meals complete with fruit and cookies.
Additionally, on Wednesdays, between 12 noon and 1:00 pm, Douglas Education Center students were provided hot food, since some of the students had not been able to travel home yet.
