If you, too, are a World War II buff and want to hear about some of the war heroes that you either don’t know much about or don’t want to forget, you are invited to hear the Rev. James (“Jimbo”) Bailey speak at the April 18 program meeting of the Charleroi Area Historical Society.

Rev. Bailey’s presentation is titled “The History of Bill Mauldin and those Two Dog Face Infantry Men- Joe and Willie.”

William Henry "Bill" Mauldin (October 29, 1921 – January 22, 2003) was an American editorial cartoonist (who served in WW II) who won two Pulitzer Prizes for his work. He was most famous for his World War II cartoons depicting American soldiers, as represented by the archetypal characters Willie and Joe, two weary and bedraggled infantry troopers who stoically endure the difficulties and dangers of duty in the field. These cartoons were widely published and distributed in the American army, abroad and in the United States.

Rev. James B. Bailey is a retired Presbyterian minister with 60 years of service in Pittsburgh, Weirton, Hanson (Mass), Cleveland, Waterloo, Monongahela, and Donora. He graduated from Ohio University, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and did a doctoral residency in Homiletics, Clinical Pastoral Care, and Drama in the Church at Boston University School of Theology, Harvard Divinity School, and Boston City Hospital. His books are “An L-Shaped Look at Life – Loving, Laughing, and Loafing” in 1997 and “Have Easy, Will Travel” in 2008. His hobbies are military history, tennis playing and coaching, world travel, and public speaking about the great issues and people of history. He and his wife, Sally Stefus Bailey, live on Victory Hill in Monongahela.

The Charleroi Area Historical Society meets on the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in Riverside Place, 303 Chamber Plaza (the former Montgomery Ward building). The doors open at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments are served.

For more information about this program, membership in the society, or its headquarters at the historic Goaziou Print Shop at 807 Fallowfield Ave., call the shop at 724-483-4961 or Ken Thompson, Program Coordinator, at 724-925-1742.
