Highlights of the February 2 meeting of the Canonsburg Borough Council follow:

In his report, Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome said he has received numerous calls from city residents praising the efforts of the Public Works Department truck drivers who plow and salt the streets. The month of January had more ice and snow than usual, and he said he was proud of the crew, who rose to the challenge. He said he was especially pleased with feedback from residents who commented on how courteous and thorough the drivers were. The mayor said that the new Dunkin Donuts shop will be an asset to the Canonsburg business community. The national doughnut – coffee shop chain plans to open in May on Cavasina Drive at the former location of Long John Silvers. Rhome said another business has indicated to him that it has plans to open in Canonsburg. It is unique type of pet kennel called Doggie Animal Hotel.Rhome also told Council that he has become aware that a recent survey poll ranked Canonsburg #2 in the state of Pennsylvania as an ideal small city in which to retire. He noted that Blue Bell, PA (near Philadelphia) was ranked #1. He suggested that Council issue a press release to publicize Canonsburg as a senior-friendly place to live.Borough Manager Robert Kipp said that the municipality is benefiting from the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). CRA is a federal law designed to encourage commercial banks to help meet the needs of borrowers in all segments of the community including low and middle income neighborhoods. Kipp said that Washington Financial and PNC Bank have both expressed interest to get involved locally.A report from Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department Chief Thomas Lawrence indicated that there were 8 calls in January with an estimated total of $4500 in fire damages.Park and Recreation Chairman John Severine announced that passes will be able to be purchased online this year for the Canonsburg Town Park Pool.
