Rostraver Township chicken regulations were adopted in January coded Under Ordinance #667.

RT Chicken Coop

Chicken - A member of the subspecies gallus domestics, a domesticated fowl.  This shall not include a rooster or any species of turkey, duck, guinea fowl, goose or other fowl.

Chicken coop - A structure for sheltering chickens, including four opaque walls and a roof with ventilation through windows or other protected openings.

Chicken run/pen - A fenced area for chickens.

Zoning District (Agricultural)

A-1 (Agricultural)

  1. Need 5 acres to have any roosters.
  2. Need at least 1 acre to have female chickens and is only permitted as an accessory use; can’t be on a vacant lot.
  3. Chicken coops and runs/pens must be:
  • 75’ from front right of way line
  • 25’ from side and rear property lines
  • 1 acre lot minimum with minimum lot width as required by the principal use.

Zoning Districts (Residential)

R-1 (Single Family Residential), R-2 (Suburban Residential), R-3 (Multiple Family Residential)

  1. Roosters are prohibited.
  2. 1-acre minimum to have female chickens and is only permitted as an accessory use to a single family dwelling.
  3. Chickens must be kept in a coop, chicken pen/run, or fenced area at all times.
  • Any structure over 200 sf requires a permit.
  • Chicken coops, runs and pens are only permitted in the rear yard. (can’t be kept in front yard)
  • Any coop or enclosure for the chickens must be located a minimum of 25’ from any lot line.
