July and August were busy months for the members of the Rotary Club of Charleroi, as they honored students for accomplishments achieved during the 2015-2016 school year.

In July, two students who participated in the Rotary Peace Card art contest were honored for having winning entries in the contest. The contest was open to all Middle School students in school districts within the confines of Rotary District 7330. Connor Lenhart, who was a 7th grade student, placed second in the contest with his entry that portrayed several countries that had been touched by terrorism. Layla Koon, who was a 6th grade charter school student, placed fifth in the contest with her rendering of a dove hovering over the globe and showing locations in Canada and the United States. The drawings of all of the contest winners were used to decorate the fronts of note cards that were sold in June at the District 7330 conference. Each student was given a framed copy of their drawing and a box of the Rotary Peace Note Cards as a memento of their participation.

In August, the members hosted Brittany Claybaugh, who graduated from Charleroi High School in June 2016 and was the winner of the Rotary Club’s scholarship for the 2015-2016 academic year. She was one of the top ten in her graduating class and has been accepted at Robert Morris University as a member of the Robert Morris University Honors College. Only the top 5% of applicants are accepted into the university at this level. Brittany plans to major in communications and thanked the Rotarians for their support both as a former student of the month and as a scholarship winner.

The Charleroi Rotary Club meets each Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. in the Back Porch Restaurant’s Side Door Lounge in Lower Speers. For membership or program information, please contact Club Secretary John Helfenstein at 724-494-3195.
