New Eagle Borough Council held its monthly meeting May 7, hearing complaints from two residents during the public forum about issues with drivers in the borough.
According to Dan Walters, of 343 Center Avenue, there is a “huge problem” with stop signs being run at Center Avenue and Maple Avenue. He asked Council for additional signage, a speed bump, or extra police patrols.
Monongahela Police Chief, Kevin Harris, who recently replaced the retiring Chief Brian Tempest, said police patrols can be added to the area. Additionally, Council said they could install battery-powered red lights on the stop sign to draw attention to it.
A resident of Union Street also asked for additional police patrols as cars are speeding excessively in that area.
Residents are also reminded that the grass-cutting ordinance is being enforced, and those with grass over six inches will be issued a citation. Junk vehicle violations will continue to be cited, as well.
In other business, Council has received several calls about the trash collector not collecting all bags of trash and leaving litter over the roads. Residents are reminded that all garbage must be contained in bags, but the borough is working with the trash collector management to resolve any issues. The borough has one more year in the contract with the current company.
Council also announced upcoming projects and events that include:
- Lighting to be installed at the pole by the concession stand at Maple Avenue playground ($200).
- Windows to be installed in the upstairs of borough building ($1,850).
- Borough building to be painted ($8,980).
- Fire Department Annual Car Show on Chess Street to be held June 8.
- Borough will hire Jason Miller, a part-time Monongahela Police Officer, as the new foreman.
